OUT OF MY MIND

When I bought the Sunday NY Times at the supermarket the checkout guy shook his head, wide-eyed in disbelief at the price. “Six dollars?!? Just for a newspaper. That’s crazy! I could understand why someone would pay four dollars for People magazine…but six dollars for just a newspaper? Oh my G-d!”…… How could Lincoln with almost no formal education and Shakespeare with so little become two of the most powerfully articulate men of their (and to some degree our) times? For one, they didn’t have People Magazine to distract them… Remember when Bush entered the White House and conservatives complained that Clinton had trashed the place leaving it in a mess? Well, didn’t Bush do that to the entire country he left behind for Obama?…. Now that we have ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ are ‘Cowboys and Vampires’ and ‘Cowboys and Zombies’ in pre-production?…Do Tea Partyers realize that the Boston original was not a political party but a ‘party’ gleefully and rowdily destroying the private property of a corporation? What would we say today if protestors destroyed corporate property and celebrated it as a ‘party?… If an 8.2% unemployment rate is a ‘Texas miracle’ what is the Massachusetts 7.6% rate (or for that matter NY’s 8.0% rate)?…Why do pundits and politicians on TV always say ‘I don’t think that–” rather than just stating what they DO think?!?…. I’ve driven everywhere around the country, in almost every state. Florida has the absolute worst drivers I’ve ever seen. Why do they think it’s a good idea to suddenly speed up behind you in the next lane the second you flip your directional on?… The United States is only one of two democracies in the entire world that has a debt ceiling. The other country is the most socialistic of liberal democracies: Denmark Fareed Zakaria’s GPS is THE (only?) Sunday political show for adults… Would you (or anyone?!?) buy a used car from Rick Perry? If you saw this guy swaggering towards you across the car lot wouldn’t you RUN the other way?…Does John Huntsman’s right eyebrow descend to relaxed position when he’s asleep? If he’s elected will this brow inspire a fashion trend? Applications of botox to only one side of the forehead could do the trick. Maybe it’s already started: ….Wouldn’t it have been a mindfuck if Obama had taken his family vacation in Branson, Missouri and gone on to take the wife and kids to Dollywood and the Grand Ole Opry? Would FoxNews still complain about his vacation?…Why did the third father on FULL HOUSE just disappear? Was he less talented than John Stamos or Bob Saget? Or Mary Kate and Ashley, for that matter?…And just where IS Monica Lewinsky these days? How come she doesn’t have a talk show? A reality show? Or even a magazine article or TV interview or profile? Does she deserve less interest than Kim Kardashian?…Someone explain to me why the Japanese yen is at its highest trading point against the American dollar. Don’t currency traders know THEIR deficit is more than twice ours at 225% of their GDP?… Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows was a wonderful film. But was it just me who kept flashing to Great Britain in World War II? You had this fortress surrounded by water, under attack relentlessly from the air, the bombed out ruins and suffering civilian casualties, the resolute leader rallying all, a monstrous embodiment of evil leading the other side. The scene of the old man sweeping up dust before a mountain of rubble is a duplication of a photo from the Blitz, if I remember correctly. Both images vividly portray the indomitable spirit behind such a futile gesture. I didn’t read or hear one review that mentioned this similarity to the Blitz…and why are the days so short in Florida?

Its sad. The amount of info in a Sunday times much be at least 20 times that of people, making it a steal. Its pathetic that the checkout person could only think (I'm guessing) glossy mag vs. news print, totally ignoring facts and info when making his judgement call. Ugh.
Vermont has something closer to a 5.5 percent unemployment rate. What do we call that?
Did you know that and undetermined amount of Rick Perry write ins in Iowa where actually Rick Parry?, based on comedic character and sketch Colbert did of the creationist one.

Yes, Alan, it is sad. And get a load of this: ‎"Between December 2007 and last June, private-sector employment in Texas declined by 0.6 percent while public-sector jobs increased by 6.4 percent, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Overall, government employees account for about one-sixth of the workforce in Texas." The private sector created jobs in Texas? Yeah, right.

Most of our modern mass media is prolefeed, to quote Orwell's term for it. Drivel and sludge produced to keep the masses docile and stupid. The sad thing, really, is that while Orwell saw this as the production of a totalitarian government, in reality it is something we've done to ourselves.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying everything has to be Masterpiece Theater and Firing Line. It is possible to strike a balance between the intellectual and the escapist. The thing is that nowadays large segments of the population seem to skip the meat and potatoes all together and go straight to the junk food dessert.
